NIOS Admission 2022-2023: Application Form, Important Dates, Eligibility Criteria

Admission will be offered to the interested candidates in the National Institute of Open Schooling into different streams subject to their eligibility. Candidates can apply for admission through online mode or by visiting the nearest Common Service Centre as per their convenience. Admission will be offered into secondary and senior secondary courses divided under four different streams namely stream 1, stream 2, stream 3 and stream 4. Admission Streams Available

Admission in NIOS is offered under 4 different streams given below as:

  1. Stream 1: All the candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria for the Secondary and the Senior Secondary courses can apply under this stream. Admissions are offered in two blocks- block 1 (April/ May) and block 2 (October/ November).
  2. Stream 2: Those who appeared but could not clear or those who were eligible but could not appear in the public exam of secondary/ senior secondary level from any recognized board are eligible under this stream.
  3. Stream 3: Candidates who have passed the secondary exam and want to update their qualification can take part admission in any subject (up to 4 subjects) under this stream. Those who appeared but could not clear or were eligible but could not appear in the public exam of the secondary level from any recognized board and want to appear through On Demand Examination can also apply.
  4. Stream 4: Candidates who have passed the senior secondary exam and want to update their qualification can take part admission in any subject (up to 4 subjects) under this stream. Those who appeared but could not clear or were eligible but could not appear in the public exam of the senior secondary level from any recognized board and want to appear through On Demand Examination can also apply.

Major Highlights

  • Candidates cannot select more than 7 subjects for study in NIOS.
  • No candidate is allowed to take admission in more than one stream or else their admissions will get cancelled.
  • Those who meet the eligibility requirements for the admission should only proceed with the submission of application form.
  • Payment of application fee can be done during registration or later as well using their user name and password.
  • Admission offered to the candidates will be valid only for a period of 5 years. Those who are not able to clear the exams during this period will have to make fresh registration to continue the course.

Eligibility Criteria

The stream-wise eligibility criteria for NIOS Admission 2022 are given below:

For stream 1:

Secondary course:

  • The minimum age of the candidate should be 14 years as on 31st July 2022 (31st January 2023 for block II).
  • A pass in class 8th is required to be eligible.
  • Those who can produce a self certificate stating ‘I have studied enough to be able to pursue secondary course’ are also eligible.
  • Candidates who had already studied the secondary level but could not complete the course or who want to improve performance can apply too.

Sr. Secondary course:

  • The age of the candidate should not be less than 15 years as on 31st July 2022 (31st January 2023 for block II).
  • A pass in the secondary course from a recognized board is mandatory for admission.

For stream 2:

Secondary course:

  • Candidates not below 14 years as on 31st July 2022 are eligible to apply.
  • The candidates should have passed their class 8th
  • The applicants with a self certificate ‘I have studied enough to be able to pursue secondary course’ can also apply.
  • Applicants who had appeared but could not clear or who were eligible but could not appear for the secondary exam can apply.

Sr. Secondary course:

  • The minimum age of the candidates must be 15 years as on 31st July 2022.
  • Candidates must have passed the secondary course from a recognized board in order to be eligible.
  • Applicants who had appeared but could not clear or who were eligible but could not appear for the senior secondary exam can apply.

For stream 3:

Secondary course:

  • Candidates with minimum age of 14 years as on 31st July 2022 are eligible.
  • Applicants should have passed their class 8th exam to be eligible.
  • The applicants with a self certificate ‘I have studied enough to be able to pursue secondary course’ can also apply.
  • Those who had studied at the secondary level can also seek admission either to complete the course or to improve their performance.

For stream 4:

Sr. Secondary course:

  • The minimum age of the applicants as on 31st July 2022 should be 15 years.
  • In order to take admission, the candidates must have passed the secondary course from a recognized board.
  • Those who had studied at the senior secondary level can also seek admission either to complete the course or to improve their performance.

Application Form

Interested candidates can apply for NIOS admission 2022 online from the official website www.nios.ac.in. Before the filling of application begins, the candidates will have to provide the identity document number and upload scanned copy of original identity document. Once these details get verified, the candidates can now fill and submit their application form.

To fill the application form, the candidates will have to provide their basic personal details. The candidates will also have to upload the soft copies of the important documents into the application form. An OTP will then be sent to the registered phone number and email address for authentication. Rest details like academic details, contact details, etc can be provided in the application form after the successful authentication.

The duly filled application form can be submitted along with the prescribed application fee. Payment of the application fee can be done online through credit card/ debit card/ net banking. However, if the admission is done through Common Services Centers, the application fee can be paid via electronic wallet of CSCs. Women candidates from the Ladakh region do not need to pay the registration fee or course of course material.

Important Documents

Scanned copies of the following documents should be uploaded into the application form:

  • Recent passport size color photograph
  • Signature of the candidate (preferably in black ink)
  • Valid identity proof (Aadhaar number, Aadhaar enrolment number, passport number, ration card number, bank account number or any other valid government identity card etc)
  • Date of birth certificate for secondary course (birth certificate/ passport/ transfer certificate/ school leaving certificate/ Aadhaar card with date of birth printed on it)
  • Valid residence proof (ration card, Aadhaar card, appointment letter from the employer on letter head, water/ telephone/ electricity bill, running bank account statement, income tax assessment order, election commission’s voter id, parents passport in case of minor)
  • Copy of permanent address proof along with present rent agreement, if living on rented
  • Mark sheet of class 8th or self certificate, for secondary course
  • Mark sheet or certificate of class 10th, for senior secondary course
  • Self attested copy of original caste certificate, for SC/ ST & OBC category candidates
  • Ex-serviceman certificate for ex-serviceman candidate
  • Disability Certificate for differently abled candidates
  • Original scan copy of failed mark sheet issued by the respective board in case the candidates registers for stream 2, 3 or 4

Process for Admission

  1. Normal Admission: To offer the admission, the documents submitted at the time of registration will be verified and an enrolment number will be generated. Selected candidates will be notified through email and SMS on the email id and registered mobile number.
  2. Re-admission of Ex-NIOS Learners: The candidates who are not able to complete their course within the duration of 5 years are eligible for re-admission. Credit of up to 4 subjects passed during the previous admission (not before last 10 years) will be transferred on submission of original mark sheet.
  3. Dual Enrolment and Part Admission: Part admission will be offered to those studying in a regular school or have passed the secondary/ senior secondary exam from a recognized board and wish to upgrade their knowledge and qualification. Only given mark sheet will be given to such candidates.
  4. Foreign Board Candidates: Admission to foreign candidates will be offered in senior secondary course, given that they have passed their HSC/ SSC exam from any foreign board. A certificate from the concerned Embassy and Association of Indian Universities (AIU) stating that the exam passed by the candidate is equivalent to the HSC/ SSC exam of recognized Indian board is mandatory to be submitted.
